I was lucky enough to go on a short tour around the Dambulla area, which included the Cave Temple. It is a World Heritage site, but to get to it is a very steep climb up many uneven steps with monkeys all around. The views are wonderful.
The caves hold a total of 153 Buddha statues and wonderful cave
paintings.From here it is a short walk down to the Golden Buddha statue,
which dominates the area. We visited the Elephant safari, had a trip in a
bullock cart, sailed across a water lily lake, and  were taught how to make
a curry from scratch using strange kitchen utensils in a hut over a wood
fire, and we beat the husks off the rice. We visited woodcarvers, had a
massage and a sauna. The trip came to an end far too soon, as Sudha our
driver had to get us to Trincomalee in time to meet up with the rest of the
team.
